Adventure Description

Moab, Utah is one of the greatest places in the U.S. for outdoor recreation. There are national parks nearby, the Colorado River flows through town, and the mountain biking is legendary. We’ll once again play in this outdoor wonderland for an extended early spring weekend. Our base of operations will be the Red Cliffs Lodge, conveniently located between Moab and Arches National Park along the Colorado River.

Day 1 is our travel and arrival day. The closest major airport is in Grand Junction, Colorado. All the major rental car companies are there and it only takes an hour and a half to get to the Lodge. When you get to Red Cliffs Lodge there will be a welcome reception where you can meet your fellow adventurers, have a snack and enjoy a refreshing beverage. Last year we sat on the outdoor deck and watched the surrounding cliffs explode with color at sunset. Room accommodations are two queen bed suites or single king suites overlooking the river.

On Day 2, after a hearty breakfast at the Lodge, we head over to Arches National Park. The park is filled with incredible rock formations, sculpted by centuries of wind and water erosion. We’ll stop briefly to view a few of the arches on our way to the main event of the day, a guided hike through the Fiery Furnace. This three hour hike is rated as “moderately strenuous” by the Park Service. On our lost recent trip our Blue Monkey Adventurers scrambled across broken sandstone, walked along narrow ledges above drop-offs and squeezed through some narrow passages. Due to the maze-like nature of the terrain, all participants are committed to completing the hike once they enter the Fiery Furnace. All adventurers must carry a least a liter of water and hiking shoes or boots are highly recommended. Don’t let the Park Service description scare you too much. While the hike is strenuous there were a couple of 10 year olds in our last group who did just fine. After the hike we’ll return to the Lodge for dinner. Italian food is on the menu with a vegetarian option if you prefer.

Day 3 is our mountain biking day. Moab has hundreds of miles of trails that suit cyclists of all skill levels. We have designed a ride that is fun for everyone in our group while still being challenging. Bicycles, helmets and water bottles will be provided. If you’d rather bring your own bike please let us know when you register. After the ride we’ll return to the Lodge to get cleaned up then you can head back into Moab where you are on your own for the evening. The town has dozens of restaurants to try as well as art galleries and other shopping.

On Day 4 you get to pick your own adventure. We have three different activities you can choose from. Red Cliffs Lodge has horseback riding on site. You can saddle up and spend the the day on the trails. Box lunches will be provided. If you didn’t get enough mountain biking in on Monday today’s group will be going for a more intense ride. This will be a bit tougher than the previous day and, with a smaller group, will probably move faster. If you’d rather just spend the day being pampered you can get an in-room massage right at the Lodge and spend the day relaxing in beautiful mountain surroundings.

The Lodge also offers fun activities you can take part in whenever you get a notion. There is a small winery with a tasting room near the complex’s entrance. The lower floor of the main lodge houses a movie museum. Several westerns have been filmed in the Moab area. There is also a pool and hot tub for enjoying mountain views while you swim.

On our final day we’ll have breakfast waiting and then it’s time to head to the airport for your flight home, where you can regale your friends and family with stories about your incredible Blue Monkey Adventure.

Please note: Airfare and rental cars are on your own. We have travel partners that can provide these services. Just let us know when you register. A detailed welcome packet will be sent when you sign up for the trip. If you have questions about this trip please call or email us.
